SPOKANE, Wash. -- Doors to the Spokane County Courthouse opened up at 7 a.m. Thursday for same-sex couples wanting a marriage license.
Major Margaret Witt and her partner Laurie was the first couple to get their license just before 8:30 a.m. Witt's story is well known for her effort in the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell."
The Air Force nurse was outed for being a lesbian and then discharged. She fought back in Federal Court, teaming up with attorneys and Washington's ACLU. A judge ruled in her favor, adding two years to the 18 she served. She's able to retire with full military benefits.
"Words cannot express how grateful I am for the support I've recieved during this fight," Witt said.
Witt said she's extremely proud to live in Washington today. She said it's a celebration for all of us, and she's humbled to be first in line.
