SPOKANE, Wash. -- An allegedly drunk driver tried and failed to outrun Spokane deputies during a pursuit through Spokane.
A deputy noticed a car stopped on the side of the road near Country Homes Boulevard and Whitehouse just after midnight Sunday.
The sheriff’s office says the driver was asleep at the wheel of the Chevrolet Lumina. The car was running and in gear. Fearing the driver would startle and drive into oncoming traffic if awoken, the deputy called in backup to block him from pulling into oncoming traffic.
The driver sped away as the deputy waited for assistance, according to the sheriff’s office. The pursuit reached speeds of 80 mph as the suspect drove down Division, Prince, Magnesium and Nevada.
Air 1 responded and kept ground units alert to the suspect’s location. The sheriff’s office’s helicopter noticed the car finally stop at a driveway on Lincoln. The driver abandoned his car there and took off on foot.
Deputies chased him through several properties. They caught up to him in a backyard in the 600 block of West Cascade Way.
The sheriff’s office took Yevgeniy Rudnitskiy, 24, into custody. He was booked into the Spokane Co. Jail for a felony charge of attempted to elude and misdemeanor charges of DUI and trespassing.
No one was injured in the pursuit.
