SPOKANE, Wash. -- In last week’s assault on the Centennial Trail, a few key people were in the area when Debbie Watkins was attacked.
One good samaritan chased down suspect Avondre Graham, but another stayed with the victim while paramedics were rushing to get there.
Sharon Nevue works at Maplewood Gardens Retirement home, which is located near the trail. She was sitting with some residents Thursday afternoon when she heard screaming. She and another employee rushed across the lawn and found Watkins holding her bloodied head.
Watkins said she had been attacked and pointed down the trail. Nevue’s co-worker ran after the suspect, while she stayed behind with the victim.
Nevue said she asked Watkins questions and tried to keep her calm while paramedics arrived.
She said the experience rattled her sense of security, and she is concerned about the welfare of the residents at the retirement home.
