SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. --Teachers and counselors planned to offer support to grieving students at Central Valley High School Wednesday afternoon.  A day earlier, recent CV graduate Jansen Badinger drowned in the Spokane River.

Rescuers pulled the 18-year-old's body out of the Spokane River on Tuesday afternoon.

Crews were called to the scene of a possible drowning around 2:20 p.m. west of the Sullivan Bridge. Badinger was not wearing a lifejacket according to firefighters. Witnesses told fire crews that the victim was trying to swim across the Spokane River.

Badinger's girlfriend said they saw other people swimming across the Spokane River without lifejackets.

The couple tried to swim across. Firefighters said the victim was pulled under the water. His girlfriend made it to shore according to authorities. Firefighters added that onlookers tried to revive him.

Medstar landed at the scene to try transport Badinger according to deputies. Medstar left about 20 minutes later when rescue crews determined the teen was dead.
