GRANT COUNTY--The Grant County Utility District said it submitted a proposal to fix the large crack in the Wanapum Dam.
The crack was discovered in February across a spillway of the dam on the Columbia River. Officials said it was caused by a mathematical error in the design of the structure.
The Utility District planned to reinforce the dam by installing 200 foot long steel cables that would stretch from the top of each pier deep into the ground. The fix was one that was used in other dams in similar situations.
Crews planned to work on installing the cables over the summer.
Shorelines, boat launches and recreational sites between the Wanapum Dam and Rock Island Dam were set to be closed.
