SPOKANE, Wash. -- The cost for first time drivers to get their license increased from $45 to $80 effective Monday. License renewal costs also climbed to $45.
That price does include taking the driving test. There hasn't been a price hike like this in 12 years, but drivers are still upset. KREM 2 talked to one man who said he's afraid people just won't renew it.
"It frustrates me because being a disabled veteran, I'm going to have to come up with more money," said Eldon Wagner. "For people on a fixed income, I think it's an unjust thing to do this."
The cost for a new license isn't the only thing going up. The cost to transfer your license from another state is up $15, as well. Fees associated with an enhanced license are also up.
The money will go toward the maintenance of state highways.
