SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A young man was sent to the hospital in critical condition after he shot himself by accident, according to investigators.

Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the house near 2nd Avenue and Sullivan Road around 1 a.m. Thursday morning.  Authorities said a 22-year-old man was handling a gun during a gathering at the home when the gun went off.  The man suffered a gunshot wound to the temple.

The Sheriff’s Office was interviewing witnesses to piece the case together.  According to Deputies, detectives interviewed nine witnesses who remained on scene but at least a dozen other witnesses fled the home before police arrived.

Investigators also said they were familiar with the home where the shooting took place, and had responded to the residence for other incidents multiple times.  Police expected to be at the scene most of the morning.

Detectives said alcohol was a major factor in the shooting.
