GRANT COUNTY, Wash. -- A pilot survived a helicopter crash Monday morning in Grant County between George and Royal City.

Authorities said the 31-year-old man from Tumwater crashed into a cherry orchard around 7:45 a.m. Christopher Iezzoni was flying a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter according to deputies. They said Iezzoni only suffered a back injury but was able to escape the wreckage.

The helicopter crashed near County Roads 9 and M-Southwest. The pilot told deputies that the helicopter became tangled in bird control netting over the orchard and crashed.

“I’m relieved the pilot was not seriously injured,” said Sheriff Tom Jones. “This incident certainly could have had a much worse outcome, and I wish the pilot a quick recovery.”

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
