SPOKANE--The organizations that help feed the hungry, like Second Harvest and the Salvation Army, say more people are using their services every year and, once again, they expect the need is as high as it's ever been this holiday season.
Spokane's Salvation Army Captain Kyle Smith says in a year's time, the fight against hunger has gotten harder. "We used to serve about a 1,000 families a month with food. Now it's up to 1,600 families a month. So we've seen a big increase over the last 12 months,” says Smith.
Last month, 18,000 people relied on food banks in Spokane County. That’s up 15% from earlier in the year according to Second Harvest’s Chief Resource Officer Rod Wieber.
