SPOKANE -- The Spokane County Sheriff's Department wants to warn the community about two old phone scams that were recently reported and could be resurfacing.
In the first scam, an East Spokane County man was called at home and told he had won the lottery, and all he had to do to collect his winnings was wire $300 to Montego Bay, Jamaica. The man refused to send any money and reported the call.
In the second scam, an elderly woman was called by a man claiming to be her grandson, jailed in Canada for a DUI crash. The man said he found a lawyer who could get him out, but needed $2,400 sent right away.
The woman's actual son also received a call from a man claiming to be his son's lawyer, asking for the same money total. The man called his son and confirmed he was in Eugene, Oregon, not Canada. No money was sent in this case either.
