The Sterling Bank Hero of the Month for November is New Vision High School Senior Shantel Shofner.

It hasn’t always been easy at school for Shofner.  She says she was bullied a lot in middle school because of her weight and because she was different than the other children.  All the bullying made her not want to go to school.

Looking back, Shantel realizes she was missing some critical support.  "It's important for kids to know they have someone that they can talk to.  I didn't understand that when I was in middle school.  I didn't have anyone," says Shofner.

So she created a project called "Shawntel's Pledge," where she shares her experiences at both the high school and elementary schools.  She lets students know they have someone to talk to and asks them to sign a pledge not to bully.  She says a lot of students are keeping their word.

All of this makes Shantel a perfect choice for Hero of the Month.
