SPIRIT LAKE-- For the past month and a half the police chief of Spirit Lake has been under investigation accused of child abuse. Tuesday investigators determined there isn't a case against Chief Patrick Lawless and no charges will be filed.
Investigation reports show police were alerted to possible physical child abuse in May. One of Lawless' two step-sons made claims that lawless abused both him and his brother.
In the report Chief Lawless admits to using a wooden spoon as a spanking tool, but he claims he could not remember other incidents the boys described.
After an investigation lasting about a month and a half, the Post Falls Prosecuting Attorney decided not to press charges.
Investigators say the boys couldn't clarify exactly when any of the alleged abuse happened. Also, the boy's mother did not confirm the boy's claims.
There were allegations that another family member may have been coaching the boys while they were making the allegations.
The Prosecutors Office calls it a case of bad parenting, but say it doesn't raise to the level of abuse.
Both boys are back living with Lawless and their mother with visits by the department of health and welfare.
Lawless is still facing sexual harassment claims from a former female officer.
