AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. – Changes are on the way to 4th of July celebrations in Airway Heights.

For many years, residents from all over the Inland Northwest came to the Spokane County town to set off their fireworks because the rules were more relaxed.

That tradition ends this year. Airway Heights City Council members passed an ordinance limiting the use of fireworks in City limits.

That means no lighting up on City property including roads and streets in neighborhoods.

Besides improving safety, city leaders also hope to cut down on the huge amount of firework debris that needed to be cleaned up in previous years.

Fireworks also will not be allowed on vacant lots and fields.

Violators of the new policy could be fined up to $1,000.
