SPOKANE VALLEY -- A building badly damaged by an early morning fire had recently been renovated.

The building houses a motorcycle repair shop and a restaurant that opened seven weeks ago.

Firefighters responded the Handle Bar Restaurant and Hell Yeah Cycles around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of smoke in the area.

Nate Smith, whose family owns both businesses, was woken up by the bad news.

“I was speechless. I didn't know.  I thought it was a dream. I didn't know what to think,” Smith said.

Investigators said the fire started in the basement and worked up to the attic. The floor partially collapsed as firefighters worked to put out the flames, but no one was hurt.

The cause is still under investigation.

Smith guesses there was an electrical problem.

There were a number of Harley Davidson Motorcycles inside the shop, but Smith did not know how the bikes fared in the fire.

Smith said his father and a business partner started a complete renovation on the building about a year ago. They plan to rebuild.

“The way I look at it, it's a hiccup. But we can make it bigger and better. If you let it take you down, you are not going to get anywhere,” Smith said.

Firefighters estimate $75,000 in damage.
