SPOKANE -- A huge new housing project is coming to Hillyard. And it is targeting those most in need.
The Market Street Station apartment building officially opened Wednesday and is part of the Hillyard revitalization project. It is located on Market Street in the heart of town.
Elderly, disabled and homeless people finally have their own place in a neighborhood that never used to have many options. There are 33 units which are all one bedrooms or studios. They are for people who make at least 50% less than the average income. A local non-profit bought the building four years ago. The tough economy meant they lost funding more than once.
"Failure was not an option. We had to complete the project. At one point, I wasn't so sure about that. But today you see the fruits of a whole lot of hard work."
The rent is based on an individuals salary. The organization is still looking at applications. They hope to have the first group of people moving in about two weeks.
The building has a number of funding sources each with a 40 year commitment.
