NEWMAN LAKE, Wash. -- The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is warning people living in and around Newman Lake to be on the lookout for cougars.  Some neighbors have said they have recently seen at least one cougar lurking around their yards.

Roger Flaa said he has seen several cougars behind his home.

"They'll look and then they'll take off," said Flaa.  "They're just about as afraid of you as you are of them."

Flaa looks out for three small dogs.  He uses a tall fence to protect them.  Flaa said while he is not exactly threatened, he does stay alert when roaming the acres behind his house.

Some neighbors have said they have recently seen cougars wandering the open fields.  Some suspect they killed a dog.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said it is not uncommon to see cougars this time of year, especially when deer are plentiful.

"It has been an easy spring; it has been an easy winter.  So we have more deer.  More deer, more food, more cougars," said Flaa.
