SPOKANE-- Spokane neighbors say the woman hit and killed by a car at Crestline and 37th this weekend was an 82-year-old who lived independently.

Ethell Barstow was struck a few blocks from her home.

Spokane Police say a female driver struck Barstow while she was crossing the street. Barstow died from the injuries.

At the time they couldn't identify the elderly victim. Her purse and cell phone were a few blocks away in her home.

Police asked media to put out the victim's description so they could notify family.

When neighbors saw the story on Saturday’s newscast they made the sad connection.

Don and Deanna Frank fondly remember their neighbor Ethell. "She would walk about four miles at times. She would out walk a lot of people in the neighborhoods."

Neighbors told KREM 2 News that the 82 year old mowed her own lawn and volunteered at Deaconess Hospital.

Police are still investigating the collision. They're interviewing the person who hit Barstow and say it appears the elderly woman was in the crosswalk when she was hit.

No charges have been filed.

We’re told Barstow leaves behind two sons.
