SPOKANE -- The legacy of a murdered Spokane woman lives on at her Spokane business. Police say her ex-fiance murdered her and her nine year old son almost two weeks ago. Now Schiering's family is trying to carry on her dream.
The store re-opened two days ago. The family says for them, being back there, is part of the healing process.
"It helps, you're close to Becky because she poured so much of her life into this," said Schiering's Aunt Bonnie Bickler.
Bickler feels comfort at The Reclothery, the consignment store her niece dedicated her life to. Rebecca Schiering was murdered July 18 at her home. Police say her ex-fiance, Jan Demeerleer is responsible. Schiering's nine year old son, Phillip, was also killed. It is a tragedy the family still cannot grasp but an outpouring from the community is helping to pull them through.
Flowers given by friends and customers now don The Reclothery racks. Cards keep coming in the mail for the family. Customers give money daily to the family fund.
Bickler says every act of sympathy is inspiring, and it encourages the family to be strong. She says The Reclothery is just one of the gifts Schiering brought to the family.
"It was something she built that we remember, but her life goes on in her children, and that's the biggest legacy," said Bickler.
The family is taking this one day at a time. They are considering changing the store's name sometime down the road. If they do, it would be called Rebecca's Reclothery.
