SPOKANE-- Spokane ranks No. 1 in Washington State for crime per capita, and local security companies say business is booming because of it.

One business owner said he’s seen almost a 60 percent increase in home security installation.

After several neighborhood break-ins, Roberta MacKay decided to take her safety into her own hands.

“I could tell there were more vehicles that were checking out our homes. They would park in the roads and watch our patters when we came and when we left,” she said.

MacKay was not going to let anything bad happen to her, so she armed her home with a security system installed by Mike Crouse, who owns Total Security.

Crouse says with crime rates through the roof in Spokane, he has noticed a huge spike in business.

“The big change we are seeing is people getting systems in their homes that didn’t wait until they got broken into,” he said.

His sales soared over the last year by 55 percent.

“They want to be more diligent on preparing themselves from being victims.”

Crouse says most importantly, he’s just happy people are being proactive.

He adds some customers ask to buy just security stickers or signs, rather than an actual security system. Crouse says he won’t do that at his business.
