WALLACE, Idaho (AP) -- The closed Lucky Friday Mine in northern Idaho will start rehiring workers in July and should have a full workforce by the end of the year.

Hecla Mining Co. chief executive officer Phil Baker says safety improvements ordered by federal regulators after two employees were killed in the mine last year are progressing.

Baker says the work should be finished by the end of the year, allowing the underground silver mine to resume production. More than 110 employees were laid off when the Lucky Friday closed late last year

Baker also said at Hecla's annual shareholders meeting that the company is studying the reopening of the closed Star Morning Mine in Idaho's Silver Valley.
