COEUR D’ALENE--The first person to complete the Ironman Coeur d'Alene crossed the finish line in a little more than eight hours, but the last person needed about twice as much time to do the same.
It doesn't matter when you get there and what hour of the day it is, every competitor loves hearing those four words, “You’re an Ironman!” The crowd is cheering louder than ever, volunteers are there to help you and a medal is waiting for you to signify this accomplishment.
As the finish line gets ready to close, the clock is approaching the 17 hour mark and midnight. Some look like they're just getting started, while others appear as if they wanted to stop several miles back.
With 40 seconds to spare, 18-year-old Jordan Khani of St. Louis made his way and crossed the line as the last finisher of Ironman CDA 2012.
He says the swim was tough, especially in cold water. The bike portion was fun even though it was a long distance and the run was more of a walk.
Initially the plan was to do one and be done, but now Khani knows his weaknesses and how he might finish slightly earlier next time, so this may not be his last Ironman. Khani says he's interested in going to Hawaii for his next Ironman.
If you want to sign up for your first or second competition, registration opened Monday for the 2013 event in Coeur d'Alene.
