SPOKANE-- Later this fall the Mead School District will unveil a new academy for high school students on the Riverpoint campus in Downtown Spokane.

The Mead School District is set to unveil its new Riverpoint Academy. It's the culmination of years of planning and research, and the educators are passionate about their concept.

Dan Butler, assistant superintendent of the mead school district says "some kids may want to go onto work, some will go onto university. We want to make sure we prepare those kids for whatever choice they make."

Riverpoint academy will open later this fall hosting courses in science, technology, engineering, and math.

High school students will be working together with industry professionals, in a "learn-by doing" environment.

Butler said, "Kids working in teams, working interdisciplinary, writing up and presenting solutions to that problem, and it could be up to two or three hours at a time."

Students will be able to earn college credit while attending the academy.

District leaders say support from community has been amazing. They believe they've come up with a winning formula.

Until state education money kicks in during the fall, the academy is being completely funded by private donations.
