COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho-- Six construction bids came into Coeur d’Alene leaders for the McEuen Park project. Bids ranged from $14 million to $17 million according to the design team.
“We had two bidders that were on the low end that were very close,” said design team member Dick Stauffer, “that gives you assurance that everyone is seeing the same thing.”
A bid from a local company was the least expensive according to Stauffer. Contractors Northwest estimated that it will cost $14.6 million to renovate McEuen Field.
“The bids came in within target area which made everyone breathe a little sigh of relief,” said Stauffer.
He and other design team members began reviewing the estimates this week along with Coeur d’Alene leaders.
Yet opponents warn that the project will cost much more than contractors estimate. Frank Orzell told KREM 2 News that he sees more dollar signs than progress. He believes that the rush to get the project done by November will increase costs.
“The problem is if you push too hard than the quality typically suffers, cost will escalate,” said Orzell.
Project organizers said they hope to start construction with in the next 30 days. Members of the design team plan to make their bid recommendations to the city council on Thursday. The special meeting begins at 5 p.m.
