COEUR d’ALENE--With the weather making it perfect to get out and enjoy the conditions, the Marine Patrol on Lake Coeur d'Alene has certainly had its hands full.
KREM2’s Honora Swanson went for a ride along Thursday with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol, who has made numerous drunken boating arrests so far this year.
The sheriff’s office has boats on the water all summer. Deputies have their hands full to protect us from those who shouldn't be out and trying to teach the rest of us how to follow the rules.
Deputies must have probable cause to pull someone over. After making the stop, deputies talk to people aboard the boat so see if they’ve been drinking to excess. They then test the driver and make sure the boats are stocked with safety gear such as a fire extinguisher.
So far this year deputies say they’ve busted almost as many people as they did all of last summer. They’ve arrested at least 20 so far and more often that not they were from out of state.
Patrols will be out until Labor Day weekend.
