SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) — Police are searching for a northern Idaho man who escaped their custody during an arrest on suspicion of illegal firearms possession.

Idaho State Police Trooper Jeff Jayne says authorities are sifting through leads on the whereabouts of 52-year-old Leland Elroy Dunnagan, who was arrested last Saturday during a burglary investigation.

Dunnagan slipped out the back of a police vehicle and escaped while a deputy's back was turned.

Police say Dunnagan was arrested because during the investigation, firearms were found in his possession, which is prohibited because of a previous felony conviction.
