SPOKANE VALLEY -- A man fell from a cliff in Spokane Valley's Dishman Hills area Monday afternoon and died.

Spokane Valley officials say a man and woman were hiking and "geocaching" in the Dishman Hills Natural Area.

According to police, the woman flagged down a passing Spokane Valley Police officer, and told him her husband had fallen down a 100-foot cliff.

Paramedics were called, but the man died at the scene.

Officers say they are treating the incident as an accident, but will conduct a full investigation.

"Geocaching" is an outdoor activity involving GPS navigation to locate containers of items hidden by other participants.

I posted a comment earlier today and it also has been deleted. I re-read the post and saw nothing in it that would compromise KREM. I'm also a Geocacher and feel that the accident was very tragic. I also have first hand knowledge of the cache this gentleman was after and you simple need to know your own personal limitations. This message is for those out there who are Geocachers. Not the "Arm-chair want-to-be's" but for those of us who get out of the chairs and go outside and enjoy this sport. Please be careful with where you go and how you get there. Please remember that "YOU ARE THE SEARCH ENGINE" and search with care....

so I posted a comment about my disappointment in Krem's lack of coverage of this story and they deleted it. They'll probably delete this too. So much for unbiased news coverage.

Sorry for the families loss. Stuart was know in the geocaching community by his caching handle, not really by his given name. The local caching community would like to know his geocaching name, so to express their regards to the person that we knew as a geocacher.

My condolences to the family and friends of this man who obviously liked being in the outdoors. I know the area well as a hiker and climber and longtime area native. If the gentleman fell from near the water tank, and over the cliff shown from below in KHQ's video, indeed the cliff is about 100 feet tall. This cliff is popular for rock climbing, but also is outside the boundaries of the nearby Dishman Hills Natural Area. I agree this appears to be a tragic accident, one that can happen to any of us. The accident Saturday night (suffered by a woman who broke her ankle hiking in the Riverside State Park area but having a successful outcome when she was found by Search and Rescue) and this terrible tragedy serve to underscore the importance of being careful and aware whatever we're doing to recreate outside--whether it's hiking, climbing, hunting, or any other activity.

I believe the cell phone was in his pocket when he fell. This was my Uncle. It was nothing more than a freak accident. They had just been talking about being careful and he just slipped and fell. It could have happened to anyone. He was a good man. I love and miss him and my heart and prayers go out to my grandparents and my cousins.

This should act as a grim reminder to both the experienced hikers and the newcomers. Hiking is not without its dangers. Be mindful out there!

I am a geocacher and actually just returned from hiking and caching in the dishman hills only to hear of this as I walked in the door. I am so sad for this family and curious to know what happened! So many pine needles and wet mud up there right now. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

I agree the coverage up there with a cell is not so great for some reason. I wonder what happened up there also. It is and has been slick up there for about a week or so. Sad though!

Sounds like a neat hobby/game, although it seems some challenges may not be right for everyone. Terrible tragedy. Condolences to this young man's friends and family. I hope they find it's no more than what it seems. A terrible accident.

I am a geo-cacher and have been up there numerous times. While there are steep cliffs and rocks, you also know your limits. Right now that area is slick and lots of debris on the ground so it wouldn't be to hard to fall or slip. People know the boundaries they can handle. I am curious as to what happened up there! For that comment above, your cell phone coverage lacks regardless of these phone companies egotistic advertising.
