SPOKANE, Wash. -- A man in Spokane County set fire to his makeshift shelter near Camp Sekani Park.
Just after 6 a.m. flames were spotted in the woods, just north of Upriver Drive across from Boulder Beach.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies said a man camping out there in a homemade shelter woke up to flames, panicked, and broke a leg and an ankle running down the hill. He was transported to the hospital.
Firefighters who responded and interviewed the man say he told them he was traveling and perhaps in the area about a week.
Early in the investigation sheriff’s deputies said it appeared this was likely a campfire that got out of hand. Deputies collected an empty bottle of vodka and a can of pork and beans near the shelter.
Deputies are still determining whether the man will face charges.
