SPOKANE VALLEY -- A decision from the International Olympic Committee to drop wrestling from the 2020 Summer Games is not sitting well with wrestlers at University High School.
Tanner Oindorff is a senior on the team. He plans to keep competing in college, and has always dreamed of going further some day.
"Basketball players -- they want to play in the NBA. Wrestlers say ‘I want to wrestle in the Olympics,’" Oindorff said.
Coach Don Owen said the decision by the IOC could turn away the next generation of wrestlers.
Other wrestlers on the team said the Olympics gives wrestling a rare spot on the world stage.
“I feel like that's the only recognition we get for the sport. It’s the only time it's really on TV," said Ryan Gabel.
Owens said he has already heard from members of USA Wrestling who are working on petitions to keep the sport in the Olympics.
