SPOKANE, Wash. -- Local kids had a chance to get a very valuable back-to-school item for free Saturday.

Volunteers with the Saturday Sunday School program at Spokane Christian Center spent a part of the morning handing out free backpacks filled with school supplies.

“Well, most of these children need backpacks,” said Linda Sharkey, the wife of Spokane Christian’s pastor.  “They are underprivileged, many of them don’t get the normal things…many of them just don’t have the things that a lot of kids do.”

In addition to backpacks, volunteers painted faces, played games, and even threw a picnic for families Saturday.

The Saturday Sunday School runs programs twice a month.
