COEUR D’ALENE--Sunny skies and hot weather will bring people to the water in droves. Lifeguards in Coeur d’Alene are preparing for big crowds, and possible trouble.
The lifeguards at City Beach are used to starting off their shift by working out and scanning the beach for dangerous objects in the water. On busy, hot days they need help from everyone on the shore.
City Beach in Coeur d’Alene came to a halt when a little girl went missing.
Lifeguards ordered everyone out of the water and two minutes after calling for her, they went out in the lake. This is called a line search.
Lifeguard Nicole Ellenbecker and volunteers peered into the murky water. In cases like this lifeguards prepare to find someone injured or unconscious.
The little girl turned up safe but officials say over the years there have been a few cases of near drowning.
Ellenbecker says she takes her job seriously “it’s fun out here... but it can be dangerous”
