STEVENS COUNTY, Wash.--The Lake Spokane wildfire burning near Long Lake displaced an entire summer camp full of children.

Dozens of campers at the Union Gospel Mission’s free summer camp on the Spokane River were ordered to leave around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 57 kids at the camp were bussed out of the area. The kids were supposed to stay at the camp for the whole week.

“We loaded on the bus and we could see smoke. The sun was bright red,” said camper Carmen Martinez. “You could see trees burning everywhere. It was kind of scary.”

The girl’s mom got the call late Wednesday night. She raced to Grace Christian Fellowship Church and found dozens of devastated campers sulking inside.

“I'm sure they're all glad they're alright but their fun week got cut three days short,” said mom Cresci Fox.

The Lake Spokane campground day use and boat launch were closed due to the fire on Thursday.
