SPOKANE, Wash. -- After more than 100 years, a landmark store in Downtown Spokane is closing its doors.

Huppin’s has been a fixture of the city since 1908, even after moving to a new building. Now, 104 years later, it’s time for a change, even if they’re selling the same products.

“We’re a destination store, and we can cover the Spokane market with one [location]. It turns out that the north store is where they’ve chosen,” Murray Huppin, Huppin’s president, said.

The owners believe customers would rather go to their other location because the store is older, smaller and has less parking options.

There will likely be some staff reductions but they’re trying to keep everyone by expanding hours at the newer location.

“I’m a huge downtown proponent. I love downtown. This is a matter of changing what customers wanted to shop.”

The store is also launching a new Web site in the weeks ahead to meet the needs of the market.

To help clean out the store, Huppin’s will have a special sale starting a week from Friday.

The owners say parting ways with a piece of history won’t be easy.

“I have a lot of very happy, very sweet memories, but the history of our company is changing.”

Generations have been a part of the store. Now, everyone believes the future will open new opportunities.
