NEWPORT, Wash. -- A homeowner awoken by the sound of his own snowmobile walked outside to find a man trying to steal it, according to police.

The man caught the thief around 6:30 a.m. Monday at his home on Herbs Drive, about three miles north of Newport.

The homeowner tried to hold the suspect at gunpoint until deputies arrived, but he managed to escape.

Deputies believe the suspect got into a white, 90s Dodge pickup truck, which was parked near the victim’s home. The car drove away toward Newport.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s, 5-foot-8 with a stocky build. Anyone with information is asked to call the Pend Oreille Co. Sheriff’s Office at 509-447-3151 ext. 2.
