SPOKANE, Wash. -- Neighbors in a north Spokane neighborhood woke up to a shocking scene Sunday.
About a half-dozen cars had their windows smashed in, and deputies had to fish their suspect out of a nearly frozen pond.
The cars' owner said this isn’t the first time something like this has happened in his area near Spokane Falls Community College.
He asked KREM 2 not to identify him, but he did show off the damage to his five cars.
“My daughter goes up, looks around, saw the window broken. She looked around again and saw the other windows broken,” he said. “We come outside and see this carnage.”
The barefoot suspects cut his foot on broken glass when he broke the windows. Deputies say the man who did it has the mental capacity of a 10 year old. He also made himself at home inside one of the cars overnight.
The cars’ owner busted the man, who took off running down the road toward a pond. Police fished out the man, who was in shorts.
Passerby Shelby Dilly helped police nab the suspect.
“He just laid down, and they came and took them,” he said. “He’s kind of scrawny. He looked like he had been sleeping on the streets-- a little dirty,” he said.
The suspect was taken to Deaconess for hypothermia.
Police say thousands of dollars in damage was done to the cars. They have not said if the man will face criminal charges.
