Spokane County is trying to find more space to house jail inmates and plans involve building an entirely new jail near the Spokane Airport.  Now their plans are facing some opposition.

The group calls itself "No New Jails" and it’s meeting Thursday evening outside the Spokane Public Works Building.  They will be attending a hearing on a new site that's been identified as the location for the new jail.

That site could be off Geiger Boulevard near the waste treatment plant.  County commissioners had previously picked the Medical Lake interchange off I-90, but have since reconsidered after the new director of Spokane International Airport made an offer on land.

Authorities say a new jail is necessary to deal with overcrowding issues at the current facility near the courthouse.  The cost, if approved, would be about $200 million.

Members of No New Jails say they would rather spend taxpayer dollars on alternative programs that help keep people out of jail for good, as well as less costly detention methods.
