SPOKANE -- It's been over a month since Greenstone Homes submitted new plans to redevelop Kendall Yards on the north bank of the Spokane River, but the City of Spokane still hasn't approved them.

Now both sides have until Friday to get things all squared away.

Mounds of dirt have been sitting on the lot since Marshall Chesrown owned the property and broke ground on the project on May 17, 2007. But before Greenstone can do anything with the land, there are still some small details that need to be worked out.

"I think at this point we're very close," Jason Wheaton, president of Greenstone Homes, told KREM 2 News.

Wheaton wants to turn the 78 acre land plot off the Monroe Street Bridge into 900 homes and 700,000 feet of commercial space. But the small details include things like how wide the streets in Kendall Yards will be.

Greenstone wants a pedestrian-friendly development with narrow streets. But officials with the Spokane Fire Department have raised concerns that those streets may be too tight. According to the City Planning Department, there has been a lot of discussion about access to Kendall Yards from the Monroe Street Bridge.

"We're down to the details and you know the devil's in the details," says Wheaton. "We want to make sure and the city wants to make sure it's done right."

Both sides say they are working in good faith. A final plan has to be submitted to the Spokane Hearing Examiner by Friday. He will decide if the scaled down plans for Kendall yards need to go before the public.

Wheaton hopes to start construction soon, by the end of March.
