SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -- The Apple Festival was scheduled to begin this weekend on Green Bluff at the same time as a big road construction project in the area.
Bruce Road from Stoneman Road to Day Mount Spokane Road was closed while crews resurface the road. That frustrated growers and their customers alike.
"Places like Walter's Fruit Ranch here on Green Bluff are having one of their best crops in years,” said Arlene Morrell with Walter’s. “But they're worried not enough customers will come this weekend because of construction."
Morrell said growers earlier in the year anticipated their best yield ever for peaches. Staff claimed, however, the ranch lost 50 percent of their customers because of the Bruce Road closure.
"Right at our peak of the season the road was closed and that was difficult," Morrell said.
More than 30 other farms were reportedly impacted by the construction.
