SPOKANE, Wash. – A group of Gonzaga University students are using every Friday as an opportunity to encourage people to appreciate their friendship and make new ones.

Jordyn Wirkkala, a transfer student, started Friendship Friday in October after she had a tough time meeting new people. Since then, the group has been stopping strangers for pictures, giving high fives, and writing compliments on anything they can find.

"We cheer people up. We're constantly smiling at people. We're telling people that we are already friends with that we love them at that they are awesome. But it's also making new friends and reaching out to that stranger,” said Wirkkala.

The group has done everything from labeling dozens of ping-pong balls with inspirational phrases, to handing out compliment stickers with phrases like, “I’m a ghost because I’m hauntingly pretty.”

Wirkkala is graduating in May, but the group hopes to continue Friendship Fridays for years to come.
