SPOKANE-- Washington State Patrol says early morning fog and icy roads in the Sunset Hill area may have been a factor in a three car crash early Friday morning. Traffic was blocked for less than an hour. The roadway is now clear. Washington State Patrol says no one was hurt when a car in the middle lane slide on ice, causing a chain reaction. Washington State Department of Transportation has since de-iced the roadway.

Studded snow tires not needed in this area?

jazzcat22 said on December 4, 2009 at 8:45 AM

No, they are not needed. Just because people are idiots and drive too fast for conditions does NOT mean they need studs. I live in the Sunset area, which is very hilly, and we do just fine with nonstudded snow tires. Quit tearing up our roads with studs! And by the way, who wrote this article? It sounds completely illiterate. "Traffic is block" and "one car slide on the ice"...nice editing!

Yes, studded tires damage our roads, but sometimes you do not know you are going too fast until you hit an icy spot and start to slide. Studded tires give you a little more traction and can help you regain control. The reason I use studded tires is due to the fact the road departments in this area do not always do a good job of clearing our streets. "WA DOT has since de-iced the roadway" Obviously they did not know there was an icy road either.

Studded Tires are USELESS on slick roads/ice covered roads. Your going to find your traction a whole lot better just having a good set of All Seasons.

Most of you don't know it but the limit drops during hazardous conditions. They can give you a ticket for even doing the limit. I would like to see it enforced and the fine should be triple!!!!!!!!!
