SPOKANE, Wash.--Spokane plays host to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament starting on Thursday. When some of the students at the universities found out that their team was headed to Spokane, they were less than excited.

Some visitors said their first impression of Spokane was that it is “very clean.”

Visiting cheerleaders and band members from Michigan State University said Spokane has left a favorable first impression on them.

“Everyone is extremely nice so far. You just walk by everybody on the streets and everybody smiles at you,” said Jordan Giglio, a Michigan State University cheerleader.

Fans from other schools compared the scenery to where they are from.

“It's a big difference from Fargo where it's completely flat.  We have a river, but it doesn't have rapids,” said Jordan Kurtz with the North Dakota State band.

Cheerleaders from Harvard said the Spokane River is beautiful.

“Originally we weren't too excited because there are places like Florida and Texas that would be really warm and we could be on the beach, but now that we are here, we really like it. It's really pretty and the weather is actually really nice,” said one Harvard cheerleader.

A total of eight teams will play in Spokane. That is pronounced Spo-can, something many of the schools were unsure of.
