SPOKANE -- A Spokane County firefighter is celebrating 45 years on the job. And he does not plan to call it quits anytime soon.
February 1965 was the first time Jack Greenamyer put on his gear and starting fighting fires. More than two thirds of his life, Greenamyer has manned a fire truck. And he says things have changed. He was around when a 1930's fire truck was still on reserve.
Greenamyer says the camaraderie and brotherhood of the firefighters is what he enjoys the most about his job. In the old days, he says they would play pranks on each other.
"Stations would come by and spray water in the windows, especially in the middle of the night," reflected Greenamyer.
He prefers to talk about what is fun instead of the inherent danger that comes with the job.
"It gets scary with the flames shooting over your head. But you don't think about it...you can't," said Greenamyer.
If asked how many people he has saved from a burning building, he is nothing short of humble.
"It's a team effort...it's not just one person."
His teams says he's the guy you want with you in a fire. Greenamyer will be the first to tell you the years have gone by too fast.
As for when he may hang up his fire hose, Greenamyer says he has a few years left in him.
