SPOKANE, Wash. -- Two families were forced from their homes after a fire ripped through a duplex in Spokane.

The fire broke out around 10:00 a.m. near the 2800 block of East Diamond.

Flames ignited in the back of the two-story home and spread up to the attic. The fire department says it had to aggressively attack the fire. Flames were under control within 30 minutes, but crews remained on scene for hours tackling hot spots.

Both families made it out safely.

Medics treated one firefighter on scene for respiratory problems after inhaling some insulation.

The cause is under investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting.
