3-alarm fire burns Geno's restaurant, nearby apartments

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A three alarm blaze started at Geno's Pizza and spread to a nearby Sinto Apartments Saturday afternoon.

Officials believe at least 8 apartment units were destroyed. More than 51 firefighters helped fight the blaze. They worked for more than an hour to put the fire out.

Fire officials said the back portion of Geno's was heavily damaged. The entire restaurant sustained smoke and water damage. The Sinto Apartments had severe fire damage to the roof and to the apartments on the second floor. All together officials believe there was $100,000 worth of damage.

Witnesses said they knew right away that this was a big fire.

"First thing we was magnificent emergency response. [They] had everything secured for at least five or 10 blocks," said Joy Collins.

Traffic was gridlocked on Hamilton as crews rushed to put the fire out. Spokane Police helped assist in controlling traffic. Hamilton was reopened around 9:30 p.m.

The Red Cross will be providing temporary housing as well as assistance with food, clothing and medical items to 16 adults, one child and one infant.

No injuries have been reported and it appears everyone got out of the buildings.

The fire is still under investigation.
