SPOKANE -- Students at Ferris High School said there was more confusion rather than concern after two small explosions forced an early dismissal.
Many students described the first explosion as a “pop” or a “bang”.
Lauren Haas was sitting in first period when she heard a “rumble” and saw some smoke travel down the hallway. She saw a few teachers huddled around the object and described a strange “rusty” smell.
Students told KREM 2 News, classes initially continued as normal. Students were told to stay out of the area of the F-Building.
During third period, another explosion happened near the cafeteria in the new building.
Witnesses said the second explosion sounded like a table unfolding and hitting the ground.
Students said everyone nearby was silent for a moment, and then concerned and confused.
Not long after, students were told there was going to be a lockdown and that they were not supposed to leave their classes.
Eventually, the evacuation orders went out with many students still wondering what had caused the commotion.
