SPOKANE, Wash. -- Officials investigated three separate crimes scenes Wednesday morning, following a fatal shooting in Hillyard just before midnight Tuesday.
Detectives said the shooting happened as the result of a drug deal.
Police responded late Tuesday night to reports of multiple gun shots fired in the area. Officers said they found a man laying in a yard of a home nearby. The man had been shot and attempts to resuscitate him failed. He died at the scene according to authorities.
Officers said they arrested a man believed to be involved in the shooting on Sinto and Napa some time later. He gave himself up without incident. Investigators said they also found a vehicle possibly connected with the case a block north at Mission and Napa.
The shooting suspect suffered injuries as well according to investigators. Both the shooter and the victim had guns said Lt. Mark Griffiths. He added that the suspect’s injuries backed up his self defense claim. In turn, authorities released the suspect Wednesday afternoon.
“There are some claims of a scuffle and a robbery and assault, those are things we have to further investigate,” said Lt. Griffiths.
Detectives interviewed more individuals believed to be involved, who the detectives said were cooperating. One woman said she saw everything happen Tuesday night.
“The shooter went around the corner then came back, that's when I stood in front of him and said let him go. He's already dead,” said Bonny Marvilla, witness.
Police originally believed the shooting was gang related and called in a gang unit to aid in the investigation. Later Wednesday, detectives said gang ties appeared not to have been involved in the incident. However, police are investigating if the deceased man was affiliated with a gang.
The investigation was eventually turned over to Major Crimes detectives. The block of East Empire between North Cook and North Stone was closed for some time into Wednesday morning as police executed two search warrants in connection with the shooting.
An autopsy was planned Wednesday on the victim.
