SPOKANE, Wash. -- The woman who was shot outside an apartment complex and the man who police say was accidentally shot by his friend and then dismembered, were cousins and the family is speaking out about their deaths.
Heather Cassel and Dylan Heinen both knew their alleged killers and so did their families.
The family had just started grieving the loss of Heinen in January. Detectives believe his friend Jeremey McVickers accidentally shot him and instead of calling police he attempted to dismember his body.
Six weeks later, the family lost another member. Police say Cassel was kidnapped and murdered. Her ex-boyfriend and his uncle have been charged in the attack.
Michael Bailey is the cousin of both victims. She says Cassel was a rising star and head over heals for her little boy.
"She was going to school, working and just being a great mom. She's an incredible young lady to juggle all that," said Bailey.
The family has set up a fund at Spokane Federal Credit Union to cover funeral expenses for Cassel.
The account is 98077 and is listed under Heather Cassel if you would like to help.
