COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — State police say there are increased patrols in the Lake Coeur d'Alene region because eagle watchers have been stopping in the middle of winding U.S. 97, creating a safety hazard.
Police said bird enthusiasts risk being ticketed for stopping on the two-lane highway, which has a limited number of areas for drivers to pull off the road.
Authorities directed eagle watchers to travel southeast along East Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive to Higgens Point, where there is a large parking area and pathways for viewing.
Eagles also congregate at the point because it is near a spawning area for kokanee salmon, a wintertime food for the birds, the Spokesman-Review reported.
