SPOKANE, Wash.-- Whitworth University leaders closed the campus to visitors Monday after a weekend storm left behind toppled trees, debris, and dangerous conditions.
Construction crews, taking advantage of the quiet summer months, already had a number of roads blocked-off when the storm hit on Saturday. Wind knocked down 30 trees across campus and loosened others. In total, four buildings were hit.
Student Brennan Metzelarr expected the clean-up would keep grounds crews busy for weeks to come.
“So they finally finished a ton of construction and they’re probably starting to wind it down a month in to school starts and now they’re gonna be working the full on month,” Metzelaar said.
The campus will remain open for students and employees, but many buildings and roads were still blocked off Monday night. University leaders were not sure how long it would take to clean-up the debris and repair the damage, but expected the work to be finished long before students return for fall classes.
