SPOKANE VALLEY -- Two pit bulls were taken to SCRAPS Friday morning, after attacking a dog and killing it.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Department reports it happened outside a home near 3rd and Bradley.

According to SCRAPS, a dog was pulled through a fence by two pit bulls in an adjoining yard. The dog died from the attack.

Witnesses report the pit bulls' owner was bitten seriously while trying to pull the dogs apart during the fight. She was taken to the hospital.

SCRAPS says the pit bulls will be put in quarantine and tested for rabies, and the deceased dog will also be tested for rabies.

Another fine example of this gentel and loving breed. The story says the owner of the pit bulls was seriously bitten, but fails to disclose if it was the pit bull's or the other dog. Personally, if I were to be bitten by my own dog, that animal would be put down immediately because once a dog bites, it can never be trusted again.

tmcas said on February 5, 2010 at 2:54 PM

must be a misprint.......have read too many blogs about this breed and how kind and gentle they are. i will go out on a limb here..........the owner is a 20 "ish" punk who likes to look tough with his pitbull and is probably unemloyed? enjoys watching mixed martial arts, drinks beer excessively, and does not add much societal value to spokane...........unless you include their yelling of "never before heard" profanities as adding value to our city. i know.......i am making big assumptions and guesses here......but the vegas odds are 3:1 in my favor!

tekoa695 said on February 5, 2010 at 3:20 PM

How many people have to be attacked or killed by this breed of dog before something is done?

crikey said on February 5, 2010 at 3:20 PM

The pounds are full of pit-bulls that no one with a brain wants...wonder why??

skime said on February 5, 2010 at 3:26 PM

I' ll bet we hear " this is the first time the dogs have ever done anything wrong", "They are such loving dogs". It's not the dogs falt, this is what they are wired to do. These dogs should not be a pet. They are nothing more than a killing machine, thats what they do.

chrissyjo said on February 5, 2010 at 3:28 PM

Exterminate and ban them. There is not redeeming quality bred into those "dogs" and people cannot control them. Kill them all.

I love the ignorant comments. Educate yourself before you make your irrational comments.

spokomptonman said on February 5, 2010 at 3:36 PM

Why is it that every one of these pit bull attacks concern lowly educated, white trash owners? What's the attraction of those types of people to this breed? The should be using the money they're blowing on this garbage to get back into school and try to make something of their lives. BTW: "3rd & Bradley." Duh...it's scumbag central. I bet the owner of these $500 dogs has kids on the free lunch program at school and gets subsidized health care for their family. Ridiculous!

chunkyluver666 said on February 5, 2010 at 3:47 PM

Poor white trash get these dogs and train them to be aggressive, because they think it will somehow make up for everything they lack.

wildland said on February 5, 2010 at 3:59 PM

I have to agree with most of the comments on this. If I see this breed on my property - they are shot on site !!!!!!!! They should be banned !!!!!

valleyguy said on February 5, 2010 at 4:03 PM

"Personally, if I were to be bitten by my own dog, that animal would be put down immediately because once a dog bites, it can never be trusted again." Funny... should do that with all the stupid ignorant people in this world instead. You would solve the "dog problem" much quicker

possum3x said on February 5, 2010 at 4:11 PM

Were the the pit's in there own yard? If so its the owner of the other dog that would be at fault that it was killed. It's funny how everyone wants to blame the pit bull , all dogs can kill it's just so that pit's are one of the strongest pound for pound so when they do bite they do more damage. It would be like me saying if a man was bigger and stronger then me we should kill them because if he did get into a fight he could kill someone. Ignorance breeds hate , to me looks like ignorant people like to post here.

toninewman said on February 5, 2010 at 4:28 PM

Obviously bad training. Maybe the owner needs to be tested for rabies!

Poor Doggie

chrissyjo said on February 5, 2010 at 4:30 PM

Hey possum, the pits pulled the other dog through the fence.......There is nothing ignorant about disliking and distrusting this breed of dog. Mine opinion comes from personal experience, in my OWN yard, with my own dog being mauled and killed. They should not be pets nor should they be allowed to live in neighborhoods, period.

pitbullfriendly said on February 5, 2010 at 4:41 PM

Obviously, all of the people who comment on pit bulls being nasty pets haven't had the pleasure of being around them. I have owned pit bulls my entire life and have not had one bad dog and yes I have a high paying job and go to work everyday. My husband and I own 4 houses, so not all low life trash or drug dealers own pit bulls. If anyone knows the history of the breed, they were breed to hunt and a lot of owners use this against the dogs themselves. Most people think since the dogs have locking jaws then they are a terrible pet. Before ragging on the breed or shooting the dog get your facts straight. No one knows the whole story behind this incident. Remember there are aggressive Rotties, German Shephards, Dobies, Akitas and the list goes on. Hell, I have a seen a Dalmation more agressive than my pit bulls. So please just learn about the breed before all the negativity.

vistadome1 said on February 5, 2010 at 4:55 PM

hmmmm....3rd and Bradley.....that address definately needs pit bulls to guard the property..arn't they just sweet, loving doggies?

tonipia said on February 5, 2010 at 5:16 PM

Sorry Peeps, but I have to agree with almost everyone on this post. Pit Bills do not belong in society with other Dogs and Human Beings! They are a breed that should be wiped out entirely.

tiger0324 said on February 5, 2010 at 5:49 PM

I have owned a number of pit bulls and they are sweet and loving. It is all about training - I have never had two at any given time. Not to say that a good owner couldn't do it - they could. My children have been around dogs all there life. Never have they felt threatened by one of our dogs. But, a friend had a big wiener dog my daughter sat next to him and was bit. The "friend" said well he likes to sit on the couch alone. Ignorance that is what makes animals mean. You need to own the animal not be owned by the animal.

jessboogie said on February 5, 2010 at 6:16 PM

Here...we....go....again. Wake-up people! Get rid of these dogs. Too big. Too strong. Too aggressive! Its funny how the pitt-lovers will ALWAYS say "This is a gentle breed" or "don't blame the dog, blame the owners" blah blah blah.....but yet, It happens again and again and again......and not only in Spokane. Pitts attack and maim and kill EVERYPLACE and ALL THE TIME! So, the pitt lovers call us opponents "ignorant". Huh. I wonder why pitts are the "ignorant-people" dog of choice?? Ignorant people defend the breed because these ignorant people, apparently don't follow the news (local or national). And everyone knows that "ignorant" means uninformed. Someones missing something....and its not me. So......? How long, as a community, are we going to let this happen? I say " lets start a petition!!!" Lets get this dangerous animal out of our city limits.

tmcas said on February 5, 2010 at 6:30 PM

i think this is one of those topics that is so heated...........we are just going to have to agree to disagree: 1) i agree that people with pitbulls are ignorant about how nasty their pitbull is and how the MAJORITY of pitbull owners are worthless punks who do not add much to spokane. 2) i disagree with anyone with does not agree with me. there..........i have learned to see both sides!

billythekid said on February 5, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I sure wished SCRAPS would let me adopt these two fast moving pit bulls. Given the constant problems society experiences thanks to these worthless, lowdown, and good for nothing animals, I'd personally love to take them out into the woods with me and come home alone. *One of the things that is true in the extreme majority of households that have one of these stinking animals is that it's quite common for it to be difficult to decide who is more crazy, the animal or the family members.

spkvllygrl said on February 5, 2010 at 7:50 PM

My parents next door neighbor has a pit last summer there was a bunch of us (including the owner for the pit) standing out front (the dog was in the back yard couldnt see any of us) he broke through the fence and came charging at me it was all I could do to jump into the back of my brothers truck while my dad pulled out his pistol. He told the owner of the dog to control him and get him off of his property before he shoots the dog I hate pits someone made a comment about them being just as aggressive as others such as German Sheppard or rotties I am not so sure about that because I grew up around both of them and this one particular pit has been raised with a German Sheppard they have the same discipline and the German Sheppard is only out to cuddle with you on the couch. Plain example of how aggressive these dogs are. I agree everyone on here they need to outlaw these dogs and make them illegal to own we will see how many more animals are killed or people are bitten for them to do so

spkvllygrl said on February 5, 2010 at 7:59 PM

oh and before any of you question as to why my dad had a pistol on him, it is because he has a concealed weapons permit.

activistcrone said on February 5, 2010 at 8:37 PM

Although no scumbag, I did live in this area for some years and frequently saw these dogs with their owner and witnessed one terrifying rampage through our neighborhood by them. On every occasion I saw the dogs with their owner, they were dragging her along by their leashes. She was not a small woman, but was never in any semblancer of control of them. On the occasion that the dogs were loose and rampaging from yard to yard on our block, they actually jumped one neighbors fence to attack her barking dachsunds. When I called 911, the dispatcher wouldn't call the police, instead routing my call to SCRAPS, which isn't open on Sundays, when the attack was happening. Another neighbor woman finally jumped into the yard where the attack was occuring and managed to get them off the smaller dogs and out of the trespassed yard. The dogs continued up and down the block for some time literally charging from yard to yard growling and lunging at anything that moved. Kill 'em all...

whatsyurbeef said on February 5, 2010 at 8:43 PM

If a dog is trained properly, given the attention they deserve, well socialized from the time they are a pup, chances are you'll have a good dog. Having that said I believe certain breeds have behavior specific to their breed. Example German shepards make good guard dogs, Golden Retreivers will probably watch the crook break in and sleep through it. Labs love the water and retreiving etc. there are always exceptions of course. Pit Bulls have been bread to fight and to kill its in their make up. I'm a dog lover but I would'nt get any pitbull within 50ft. of a child.

zoomzoom said on February 5, 2010 at 9:01 PM

It is NOT the breed...ALL dogs have the ability to be territorial. Add to that, that when there is more than one dog in a househould the dogs can sometimes develop a "pack" mentality... This really is something that could've happened wih othe breeds. The responsibility does fall on the owner, though. It says she was trying to intervene, however, if she can't handle one or both of her dogs, it is her responsility to recognize that.

bigdogrunswild said on February 5, 2010 at 9:26 PM

For those of you that defend this so called fine breed of dog, you boast of how wonderful and loving they are. You also proclaim we educate ourselves before bashing the dignity of the incredible dog. So I did just that.... I spent some time surfing reputable breeders to find what I could be missing. I was sickened by the leather spiked collars of the loving family dogs and amazingly enough no children in sight on any of the site I visited. So before you embarrass yourself with ignorant comments about a killing breed of dog, start with you local breeder and tell them to clean up their acts. THE BREEDERS ARE THE ONES TO BLAME FOR KILLING YOUR SO CALLED FAMILY DOGS. Get it?????

spokanegrl said on February 6, 2010 at 12:43 AM

I think it's sad how much attention is drawn when a pit bull attacks another dog. I own three pits and all are loving dogs that get along with other dogs and have never bitten anyone or even snapped. Maybe the owner should have had a better fence in her yard if the dogs were aggresive but I hate to see the entire breed suffer because of incidents like this. And any dog owner of any breed (especially pits) should know not to get in between dog fights with their hands/body. Using a broom stick or even water will help break the fight up. Maybe the blame should be placed upon the negligence of the owner, not the dogs who were protecting their property. With all that said and my support for the breed clear, I feel for the owner of the deceased dog. I love my dogs like they are my children and I know its a hard loss to deal with.

twotikes said on February 6, 2010 at 4:40 AM

Far to many stories with horrific outcomes from this breed of dogs. Some of which have come from owners whom thought their pit was a great dog and wouldn't harm anyone, later to be faced with the death of a child.

norealnews4us said on February 6, 2010 at 7:35 AM

More uneeded harm, sad indeed, these dogs though, make it easy to spot the criminals and their elements, they make my life easier as I know who to avoid altogether, the most humor is found in that the mass majority are raised in the criminal element, by criminals, to protect these criminals and their activities from other criminals make this highly laughable, where you find a Pitt Bull you find drugs and seedy criminal elements ALWAYS !

tanker said on February 6, 2010 at 8:19 AM

Ownig a pit bull is like owning a trained T REX. You can train a T REX not to bite but thats what a T REX is good at. No one says you cant own one, but you had better be able to accept the consequesces of owning one if it does what it was bred for. See the actual problem here is The owner is not taking responsibility for their decisions in life. Honestly 2 pit bulls, Why? Do you need protection from bad guys? Why do you own 2 pit bulls? What is the purpose of owning 2 pitbulls. The owner must have been afraid of their neighborhood. Why dont you own 2 yorkies, or 2 german shepards, 2 dobies, 2 golden retievers, 2 black labs. I will tell you why , because felt afraid of your neighborhood and went out and bought? 2 pitbulls because they are feared by many and for good cause. You thought if I go out and get 2 pit bulls , not 1 but 2 then thugs wont mess with my property. Well you need to accept the resposibilty of these actions you bone head.

norealnews4us said on February 6, 2010 at 9:08 AM

Jail the Dogs and Shoot the Owners... Criminal(s) this is such a dead giveaway, where you find a Pitt Bull you find a criminal record, history, and element(s) occuring, or about to occur... Charge all owners $5000.00 Cash only per year (license), Fully Insure them (2 million min policy), and Chip their brains with an Auto dead switch that may be pressed in the event of attack, total cost per dog should be around $10,000.00 Cash annually Implant cost(s) this should eliminate the Love and affordibility of the breed, and provide some Insurance to Joe public from these Killer dogs and thier stupid owners. failure to comply should require immediate execution of the Dog and Impoundment / Fines levied to the owners payment due upon citation of crime or immediatly jailed and held until paid, CASH ONLY !

joecartwright3 said on February 6, 2010 at 10:44 AM

What is it going to take to get people to wake up? These dogs are dangerous and should not be allowed in the state. To say that it is only how you raise 'em is like saying the flame won't burn you when your house catches fire. I have nearly been bitten buy the deadly things myself buy one that was allowed to roame free! I have also seen so-called friendly bulls go after the mail man and other people. They are wild animals and they are unpredictable. I once had a friend that saved a rattlesnake and thought that it wouldn't bite anyone if he treated it properly. --It bit a good friend of mine during a party. I think that they should have to have two million worth of insurance and a sturdy escape proof cage to keep 'em in. Then, we could cut back on such critters. I have nearly been attacked by other dogs that were allowed to run wild as well. I think that all dangerous dogs should insured. This should include the country, too!

joecartwright3 said on February 6, 2010 at 10:48 AM

I once hit one in the nose on an old dark road.Until i heard the dog yelp, I thought tht I hit a pole or something. People like to walk these old roads and we should not be subject to frequent dog attacks. (PLEASE CHAIN THEM UP)!

I live in the Gonzaga Prep area and have had a ton of trouble with pit bulls. One neighbor has one and in one week it went after my neighbors trapping one in thier backyard and her husband in thier house. On the same day it charged me and my lady in my driveway We are down the block. Spokanimal sent out an officer that the dog squared off with for twenty minutes until the dog owner ran out, got the dog, and contained it. The dog was not taken and the owner was not cited even though the dog is not licenced, has had no shots for rabies or any other needs, and had gone after four different people in one day. Why? The owner told Spokanimal he didn't have the money. One week to the day later the same dog jumped the fence again and came after us again. This time Spokanimal did not respond, telling us that untill the dog causes true injury to a human and or draws blood from one of us it will not be considered a danger. FIRE SPOKANIMAL- CALL MAYOR VERNER (Spokanimal Supporter) -BAN PIT BULLS

One last note. To the person that stated on this site that ignorant people post on this site, YOU too posted here!!! To help your ignorance let me help you understand one thing on this subject. The neibors here are prepared. Should this Pit Bull attack again,be it against, neibors, neibors children, our grandchildren, friends, passers by, or our pets this Pit Bull will never return home. This is one thing that this whole neiborhood more than agrees upon. We all watch for each others safety. This should not have to be how animal control needs to be done, but will be if needed. Animal laws that have been passed should be inforced. There is no reason that we are subjected to attack on our own property. I hope this has helped you with your ignorance. Ban Pit Bulls! Protect People!

2ravenf0x2 said on February 6, 2010 at 12:46 PM

the saddest part is it isn't the breeds fault it is the owners! I own a red nose and he is the best dog in the world and it is funny somewhat but very sad most of the time that almost immediately people are scared of my dog. He loves kids heck I have a 3 year old. He listens when given a command and he always aims to please. People who are commenting on here who say things like 'how many people need to be killed by this breed or hurt by this breed?' Need to wake up and do the research before commenting. For starters only one of those dogs in the picture even has pit in it. Did you know that there are 26 different breeds that people have swarn are pitbulls that are not? This breed has been the scape goat breed of the media for years and funny thing was this breed was the first breed to ride across the united states in the first car built to take him. This breed was our first hero to be given a metal for bravery in war in the US. But again it all comes down to the owner not the dog

2ravenf0x2 said on February 6, 2010 at 1:02 PM

I want people to know my family is dog lovers and in my whole life we have had our share of bad egg dogs ones that became unstable and were vicious and I can truthfully say not one pit we owned was one of them. we had a blue healer who was almost beat to death by a bad owner named Mia who snapped in the head and tried to kill my father. My sister had a golden retriever named Bo who we found out was trained to attack at whistle command by a guy who beat him to train him. He almost killed my sister she still has physical and mental scars. She also owned 2 boxers who were messed up, one attacked the mail person the other attacked her other boxer and almost killed him. Our friends doby got water on the brain i think it was, regardless she turned and attacked our friend and her mom if it hadn't been for a door they were able to shut between them and the dog who knows what would have happened.

joe_blow99 said on February 6, 2010 at 4:20 PM

Spokane County Sheriff and Prosecuter have proven over and over that they do not represent the citizen's interests. Instead of fighting voter approved medical marijuana, they should be fighting real crime. Example: Those pit bulls that killed a beloved pet and seriously injured two people in a horrible attack. The Sheriff's office did nothing about it when they had a chance to and look what happened! And why did they do nothing about a **known** danger? Because they're too busy trying to get the Federal reward money issued to law enforcement for making a "big bust." Yeah, who cares that there is other crime going on and people are getting hurt, when you can get Federal money by busting people who are not hurting anyone. I'm sure glad I don't live your Sheriff's "hood". You stupid people in Spokane County got what you deserve. Maybe you lameass people will get off your collective fat rear ends in the county and bring about change.

octane said on February 6, 2010 at 6:12 PM

To 2ravenf0x2 and anyone else praiing Pit Bull gentle behavior. Bad owner behavior and poor training is inexcusable with any animal. But, you need to learn more about what you claim. The Pit Bull you write about getting a medal was an attack dog that did his job. (BREEDING) Doby-Boxer, Both of these breeds you mention were bred soley to be agressive. A Golden Retriever with water on the brain ? Give me a break! When was the last time you read about Black Labs killing people or Saint Bernards maybe Bull Mastives or a Siberian Husky. These breeds are bigger and stronger and not bred to do harm. So They Don't ! Check the national statistics Pit Bulls Are more apt to go bad, do harm and hurt those around. They are highly tempermental and can snap without warning at anyone. Any dog of that breed simply is a danger. Training is great but you can not leash train an alligator. I wish you best of luck towards safety most of all for your childs sake. Now open your eyes and learn something.

canyouthink said on February 7, 2010 at 7:16 AM

Funny I see no fault here. They were in their own yard.Maybe the owner of the dog that died should have made sure his dog couldn't get its head threw the fence so the other dogs could pull it threw. That is kinda like walking down the road and deciding to pet a dog behind its fence. Then when you get bit(which sooner or later you will) sue the owners.Of course we only get part of the story here..O ya that one is a funny looking pit. I guess any aggressive dog is a pit.harharhar

snowlinealpacas7 said on February 7, 2010 at 8:03 AM

After I saw this story, I went and looked at the national statistics. Pits certainly have the record by far for killings and maulings over the last few years. They have the stories of each killing, who was killed and how. Many were average responsible individuals that owned the Pit as family dogs. Pit owners, take the time to read these accountings, you will see why some folks are concerned about the breed.

snowlinealpacas7 said on February 7, 2010 at 8:29 AM

Actually, these are International statistics also. The killings are human, (mostly owners and children) not pets. The two top killing breeds were Pits and Rots, however, the Rots were about 1 in 10 compared to the Pits. Facts, not opinions.

notinmyyard said on February 7, 2010 at 9:31 AM

canyouthink--You show you can not. These two dogs broke through the fence to someone elses property and killed another dog. They also sent their owner to the hospital. This is the second time for these two dogs. Are you also trying to say that if you walk through my yard it's ok for me to attack you? If you reach over my fence to shake my hand I can harm you? Having a beware of dog sign on your property says one thing, you know your dog is a danger to others and yes, YOU ARE LIABLE FOR THAT DANGER ! Pit bulls are not defending their property they are getting loose and attacking others away from their owners homes. Should one of these attacks take place on my property or at one of my neighbors homes the dog will be terminated on the spot. As others have stated on this site you need to open your eyes and get the statistics. They are facts not rumors. Anything that is a proven danger to others must be stopped. The ownership of pit bulls must end. Let's try this, When they attack-Kill Them

dega77 said on February 7, 2010 at 10:44 AM

vegasman ... not every breed that bites someone is dangerous. Some dogs bite because they've been abused. Depending on the breed, if put in a home where constructive dicipline and love are applied, an abused dog that's a biter will learn to trust again. I agree, however, that some breeds ... doberman, shepard, pit, rottweiler ... if untrained, after they bite, they need to be put down. It's unfortunate that the dog often times pays because the owner shouldn't have had them in the first place.

sarge527 said on February 8, 2010 at 4:42 AM

You can say all you want about how "Loving and gentle" pit bulls are, we had friends that owned a pit bull and I know for a fact that dog was Never mistreated and was well taken care of by a upper middle class family... then one evening the dog went nuts and killed their two year old little girl and mauled their 5 year old..... The kids had not done anything to provoke the attack, the dog just went off... So from that day forward where ever I get the opportunity to put one of these dogs down I have no feelings about doing it... and I love dogs, except pit bulls, they may have been bred for "Hunting back in the 1800's but that was a long time ago and they have been bred as fighting dogs for the last century or close to it... I say put them all down and ban them from the state...
