ST. MARIES, Idaho -- The U.S. Coast Guard has denied a permit that is necessary for a jet boat race in St. Maries, Idaho.

The denial of the permit comes two weeks before Race the Joe! that was scheduled for May 17-19. The race committee received a call and an e-mail notifying them that the Coast Guard would not authorize the permit for racing on the St. Joe River.

A race spokesman says without the permit the race is not in compliance with insurance and sanctioning from the American Power Boat Association. The race can not be held without insurance.

Organizers also say they are working to fight the Coast Guard decision.

Volunteers have been working for almost a year on the event. It was approved by the City of  St. Maries, Benewah and Shoshone County authorities.
